Sigh, oh Carmel.  One of those coastal getaway spots that once you’ve traveled there once, you from then on think it is your very own secret hideaway.  It is in fact however a very popular destination for artists and west coasters alike, as the precious cottage town, rocky cliffs and beach overlooks make it ideal.

The San Francisco-based firm, Sagan Piechota Architecture is responsible for this breath-taking project.  Perched atop a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of the ocean, the home appears as a natural extension of the landscape while resolving competing private and public concerns.  The team choose to split the house into two wings, recessing it into the site and partially underground in order to create a courtyard.  The east wing provides privacy from Highway One and the west wing buffers the ocean wind.  Secondary spaces are located on the lower floor and borrow light from above through three staircases.

In 1999, Daniel Piechota partnered with Loring Sagan to form Sagan Piechota Architecture, with the primary mission to provide people with architecture that connects them with their environment, urban or rural.  With over 100 structures behind them, they are leaving a nice trail of modernly designed spaces to enjoy.

Even tiny little shoes deserve some great design to be displayed on.  In this shoe shop designed for children, Marcello and his Italy-based team from DesignWerksstatt focused entirely on the clients for which the retail store was geared towards.  The modernly fresh concept resulted in both a spot to shop and play for these tiny footprints.

The atmosphere of the store invites fun inside, and includes free-spirited details such as stickers behind the counter, a fauna of wooden animal furniture pieces, and maze-like wall displays for shoes.  Keeping their young customers in mind, the line of chairs were especially designed and basic yet decorative graphics keep the imagination going.  The plywood shapes are iconic animals that children are encouraged and triggered to interact with.

The simple yet vibrant color palette is not the only thing bouncing off the walls.  The collection of animal furniture designed by DesignWerkstatt has become so popular, that the team is already working to expand and update the collection of furniture now limited to seating in the shape of animals for a mass production!

The best remedy to the winter blues—and icy winds if you’re in northeastern U.S.—is to scroll through pictures of modern homes located in places with warmer climes. And somehow the perfect summer getaway homes always seem have the exoticness of tropical or far-flung regions in the world and the effect of making the city around it dissolve away. Such is the feeling that pervades Villa Allegra in Miami, Florida, which was designed by the firm Oppenheim.

With almost a palatial appeal, the expansive two-story villa is a serene oasis in the bustling city. The house features a pond in the rear, which is surrounded in various plantings and shielded by palms and foliage that enhance the villa’s tropical atmosphere.

The villa has an open floor plan that accommodates a living and entertaining area that flows into the dining space followed by the kitchen. The living area is matched by a second sitting space that can be closed off with curtains, and both have views facing the pond in the backyard.

Warm woods, streamlined seating, as well as white fabrics add to the villa’s feeling of being a modern beach house on an exotic island. Nonetheless, a few extravagant touches can be found throughout ranging from a crystal chandelier in the kitchen clad in stainless-steel appliances to a glass-enclosed bath featuring luxurious shower fittings.

The master bedroom has the most enchanting décor, which mixes a canopy bed that is dressed in flowy white silk with a traditional-style table with a base that has branch-like legs. Perched on the second floor, the bedroom overlooks the treetops on the property like a treehouse.

Via…Room Decor

Orignally used as stables, then as a bomb shelter, and followed by its most recent incarnation as a print shop, this expansive warehouse space located in Barcelona, Spain, has withstood the test of time and numerous transformations. Now the designers Benito Escat and Alberto Rovira have given the space yet another purpose by recreating it into a handsome urban loft that is everything modern and hip.

Escat and Rovira collaborated on the design of the loft with Elina Vila and Agnès Blanch of the local interiors firm Minim, which is known for creating modern spaces that often retain their original architecture. The 8,600-square-foot space has an open layout with beautiful exposed-brick walls, high ceilings, and poured concrete floors.

With two floors, the main level features the living area, which is outfitted with an extra long sofa, leather-upholstered wooden armchairs, and a sleek low cocktail table. Just behind the living area, a colorful floral glass chandelier hangs over a stainless-steel dining table while an edgy light fixture is suspended over a steel island in the kitchen where a wall of lacquer cabinets has been installed. A corner on the main floor functions as the library/office and contains stacks of books, art, vintage globes, and a towering grandfather clock.

Contrastingly, the lower level of the loft resembles a city apartment and houses the light-filled master bedroom and bath. The walls are painted stark white and the floors are of polished wood. A luxuriously upholstered bed is placed in front of a wall of shelves that serve as an open closet, and a freestanding bathtub along with a mirror-walled shower closet with sleek shower fittings.

The recently completed HAAZ Design and Art Gallery is not only a well designed spot dedicated to showcasing a collection of mixed media and design projects, but really and truly is on exhibition itself.  The space welcomes with open arms a wide collection of furniture, design objects and art while at the same time showing off it’s own thoughtfully designed interior and exterior.

The design team of Global Architectural Development (aka GAD) collaborated with the location’s owners Ozlem Avcıoglu and Murat Patavi to develop a concept that worked well in their new Tesyikie district hot spot – which happens to be the most popular and prominent shopping district in Istanbul.  Being the ground and first floors of an attached apartment, the 220sm area needed a renovation.

The main architectural approach was to produce a space that could be broken down or utilized as one large space, but to give a familiar and cozy feeling at the same time.  Materials such as wood and stone were selected, and a space was produced that is now easily flexible for the variety of installations and collections that come and go.

Located on an woody site at Meco beach, nearby Sesimbra in the outskirts of Lisbon, this gorgeous house by Jorge Mealha Architects aims to a close relation with surrounding space, a beautiful natural landscape. A set of restrictive regulations, defined in the city council masterplan project, namely distances to borders, access, total amount of construction area and volume were a condition to be addressed and surpassed.

The resultant form proposes an almost accidental arrangement of different and overlapped solids, dealing with mass and voids. Windows are opened in a free way trying to catch the most interesting spots in the surrounding landscape or the attached external spaces and volumes.

Using different materials, the house proposes an arrangement of solids, gives opportunity to light emphasizing forms and suggest a concern in controling the relationships between external and internal areas.

Some circulations, as the staircases and bridge between upper rooms, are in white painted metal and glass, drawn as light as possible.

These creative LOS!Series lamps, named the LOS #1 and LOS #2, use magnetic technology developed by Crealev (Creative Levitation Design) for a unique hovering effect. Each of the designs use energy-efficient LED lighting and the floaty bits hover about 3-4cm above the base. Personally, I love LOS #2 – It has a futuristic style to it.

These bright colored dining tables by Danish designer Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt is made of reclaimed pieces of wood. Description from the designer : The tables are the second installment of my project on sustainability and the use of recycled materials in furniture making.

The tabletops are made of leftover wood from the Danish kitchen manufacturer Multiform. The patterns are constructed of wood, laminates and handpainted wood.  The project was carried out at the National Workshops for Arts and Crafts. The tables are approximately 92 x 190 x 74 cm. The tabletops have been lacquered and the metal frames are painted in different colors.

Angel is a new stool from the Danish industrial designer Gry Holmskov. The Angel stool incorporates a minimalistic seat with no backrest and a fanned out base. It was created using steel rods, and it is inspired by the annual rings of a tree. The strength of the construction comes from where the steel bars contract, and the lines leading out offer the support for the seat. Available in 5 colors.
